Breast surgery in Alicante
Reducing the size and weight of the breasts by removing some of the breast tissue, fat and skin, for smaller, lighter and firmer breasts. It is usually considered when the volume causes physical discomfort, and Dr Navarro assesses each case before recommending it.

The technique
Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) decreases the volume of the breasts by removing some of the breast tissue, fat and skin. At the same time the breast is reshaped and the areola is moved higher, so the breast ends up smaller, lighter and better positioned.
The areola is not completely detached: it stays connected to a section of tissue (the pedicle) that preserves its blood supply and, to a large extent, its sensation.
The scars depend on the size of the breasts. The most common pattern is a scar around the areola, another running vertically down to the fold and another along the inframammary fold, in an anchor or inverted T shape, similar to the scar of a breast lift. In smaller reductions, a vertical scar alone is sometimes enough.
This surgery leaves visible scars, although they usually fade over time. If you are planning a pregnancy or significant weight loss, mention it at your consultation, as either could change the result.
Suitability
If you are losing weight, it is usually better to wait until it stabilises. You should also know that breastfeeding may be affected after surgery and that smoking increases the risk of healing problems.
At your consultation, Dr Navarro will assess with you whether this is the right time and what you can expect in your case.
Before you decide
Every breast is different, and so is the discomfort it causes. At your first consultation, Dr Navarro sees you personally and takes the time to understand what is happening and what you expect from surgery.
01
What discomfort you have, how it affects your daily life and what breast size you would like.
02
Examination of the breasts, the quality of the skin and the position of the areola, with the measurements that help to plan the technique.
03
Depending on your age and medical history, an ultrasound scan or a mammogram may be requested before surgery.
04
You take the proposal home in writing, with the expected scar pattern, the quote and the risks. You can raise any questions before you decide.
On the day of surgery
Beforehand
Pre-operative tests and an assessment by the anaesthetist. If you smoke, you will be asked to stop a few weeks beforehand.
To begin
With you standing, Dr Navarro marks the new position of the areola and the tissue to be removed. General anaesthesia is then given.
Reduction
The excess breast tissue, fat and skin are removed, the areola is raised and the breast is reshaped. As is routine, the tissue removed is sent for analysis.
To finish
The incisions are closed with fine sutures and a dressing is applied. In some cases a thin drain is left in for one or two days.
Afterwards
First night
You usually spend one night in hospital. Any discomfort is controlled with the prescribed medication.
At 48 hours
The dressing is removed and replaced with a non-wired bra, which you will wear for about a month.
Weeks 2 and 3
Your scars are checked at a follow-up appointment. Many patients return to work that is not physically demanding after around two to three weeks.
Weeks 4 to 6
You gradually return to exercise, as Dr Navarro advises, starting with gentle activities.
6 to 12 months
The breasts settle and take on their final shape. The scars continue to mature and fade for a little over a year.
Important information
Like any surgery, breast reduction carries risks. Most are uncommon, but it is important to understand them before you decide:
There are also the risks associated with anaesthesia. Dr Navarro will go through them with you at your consultation, and they will be set out in the informed consent form.
Common questions
It depends on your starting size and your body proportions. At your consultation you will talk about the size you would like and what is reasonable in your case.
Yes. There is usually a scar around the areola, a vertical one and often another in the fold beneath the breast. They usually fade over time, and the one in the fold is covered by a bra or bikini.
Many patients notice relief in their back, neck and shoulders, but it depends on each case and on whether there are other causes. This is assessed at your consultation.
You may be able to, but it is not possible to be certain. Because some of the breast tissue is removed, breastfeeding may be reduced or not possible.
In most cases it is preserved or returns over the following months, although in some patients it remains reduced.
The tissue removed does not grow back, but the breasts can change with pregnancy, weight changes or age.
Once the breasts have finished developing. This is assessed individually, especially in young patients with significant discomfort.
It depends on the size of the breasts and the technique. You will receive a personalised quote after your first consultation.
